Bob Mecrate-Butcher, Partner

Bob is an employment lawyer with more than twenty years’ experience.

His focus is on working closely with HR and legal teams providing clear, pragmatic and responsive advice allowing businesses to achieve their commercial objectives whilst mitigating employment law risk.

Bob principally advises employer clients and has particular experience in advising clients within the financial services sector.

He has significant experience in resolving “red flag” reputational risk cases, restrictive covenant enforcement, executive terminations, restructuring and redundancy processes, TUPE issues on business acquisitions, outsourcing and offshoring and providing practical training to mitigate employment law risk.

He is also experienced in advising senior executives and employees on achieving exit on best terms and resolving difficult and sensitive employment disputes.

Bob has written a textbook on TUPE transfers and for many years chaired, devised and spoke at the Law Society Commerce and Industry Group Annual Seminar on TUPE.

  • Advising major telecoms company on numerous issues including executive departures, disciplinary issues, responding to grievances, restrictive covenant enforcement and issues on recruitment and implementing redundancy programmes.
  • Devising and running dignity at work training programmes designed to mitigate the risk of discrimination claims for numerous financial institutions including a number of major investment banks, insurance brokers, Islamic banks and proprietary trading firms.
  • Advising on, responding to and resolving numerous “red flag” reputational risk claims including advising bank on responding to grievance alleging bullying and discrimination by CEO, and ultimately on dismissing CEO, insurer defending contractual claim seeking in excess of a million in relation to bonus and UK listed IT company on claims of sex discrimination by a senior saleswoman.
  • Advising private equity firms on strategy to exit senior executives in portfolio companies and shareholder issues involving potential unfair prejudice and issues surrounding good leaver/bad leaver status.
  • Advising financial institutions on issues surrounding remuneration codes and senior managers regime (“SMR”), including training banks on SMR.
  • Advising numerous senior executives and employees in responding to redundancy scenarios, circumstances of potential constructive dismissal or other sensitive circumstances, achieving positive exit on good terms or other appropriate resolutions.
