Television

Marriott Harrison's television practice broadly falls into two categories. Firstly, we act for a number of broadcasters, particular those using the new media of cable and satellite, and secondly, we act for various production companies.

We are regularly asked to advise broadcasters on issues affecting ITC licences and also have assisted with a number of ITC licence applications. Another important issue for broadcasters is the licensing of music used in broadcasts, and in this respect we have negotiated arrangements with the various music collection societies including PRS, PPL, MCPS and VPL.

In relation to television production, we advise on all aspects of a production project from its inception and development right through to the agreements with broadcasters. This can involve advising on co-production arrangements both in the UK and overseas and the protection and exploitation of format rights.

Whether acting for both broadcasters and producers, drafting and/or negotiating the contractual arrangements for individual talent is also an important part of our service.

An individual who has come up with an idea for a television programme format will often want to protect this format idea before presenting it to a broadcaster or other third party. An idea alone will not be afforded protection under copyright law so we can advise on other measures an individual can use to protect his or her idea.
