Funds can be appropriated by such characters in a number of different ways. They are often siphoned out of companies; or hidden in a network of offshore entities; obtained on the promise of investment in companies, timeshare apartments or pyramid schemes; shares are made to appear as though they have been 'stolen'; or loans are made and not repaid.

The essential tools available to litigators to trace assets in most jurisdictions are private investigators, asset-freezing, search and seizure injunctions, disclosure orders and the involvement of regulatory authorities.
